It will be easier to answer the second question first: This website is aimed at two particular groups, though certainly the content is meant to be accessable to all. First, Life After Liberal Arts is aimed primarily at recent graduates who have been thrust into a hostile and unforgiving job market (one more hostile than previous generations have encountered). Many students graduate without any real-world business experience (even those with business degrees!). We aim to fix that.
Second, Life After Liberal Arts is also aimed at those who have perhaps worked in academia for some time, only to find themselves for whatever reason ejected from--or facing ejection from--the ivory tower. Colleges and universities are downsizing, while costs are simultaneously raising exponentially, and yet paradoxically more and more graduates flood the marketplace further devaluing the status of being a degree holder.
Life After Liberal Arts exists for one purpose. It exists to help equip you for business. We aim to share relevant information and resources about the job market and other relevant issues, but also to put forth an idea -- one which may seem initially radical to those who have viewed themselves in a traditionally pedagogical role, and who may have even looked with disdain (rightfully or wrongly so) at those who enter the "business world."
That idea is this: START A BUSINESS.
You need a realistic plan for success, one that doesn't depend on the mere hope of an eventual, profitable career and tenure. You need a way to make your self independent from the financial market and the discretion of administrators removed from you. And that plan needs to involve starting a business, even if it's one you do part time.
If this website inspires you to start your own business (as it has for many), then it's doing it's job.
